Edwin Hatton graduated in 2007 from the STU master's programme and currently works as a project manager for anti-discrimination at the city hall of Grenoble. Between his first and second year of the master's programme, he undertook an optional internship at the HALDE [High Authority for the Fight against Discrimination and for Equality, now merged into the Defender of Rights], which allowed him to meet various professionals in the fight against discrimination. During his final internship, he conducted diagnostic missions for the ACADIE consultancy related to urban policies, housing, and anti-discrimination efforts.
Upon graduating and armed with his experiences in the field, Edwin is recruited by the Parisian consulting firm ALETEYA [now ALTIDEM], which specialises in fighting discrimination. For just over two years, he undertakes consulting assignments for businesses and public administrations, allowing him to quickly integrate into the working world and understand the functioning of the various organisations he interacts with. He acknowledges that students from Sciences Po are valued in consulting firms for their adaptability, synthesis skills, and initiative-taking abilities, but that working conditions are often challenging (stress, frequent travel…).
It is then through a colleague that he becomes aware of a job opportunity at the city hall of Grenoble, where he has been employed as a project manager combating discrimination for the last four years. The main project he has been working on for two years is the city of Grenoble's application for the "Diversity" label, awarded to public or private organisations with an internal equality policy. This involves carrying out a number of actions: a risk assessment; the establishment of a monitoring unit; training for elected officials, unions, and staff; internal and external communication actions; and the implementation of monitoring indicators… Meanwhile, he manages relationships with associations fighting against discrimination, organises events related to this theme (conferences, exhibitions, screening-debates), and participates in networks for exchanging best practices between local authorities. He has also conducted numerous internal and external training sessions to raise awareness among professionals about discrimination issues. The main difficulty he faces is related to the institutional resistance that this sensitive topic generates, which significantly hinders the implementation of projects.
Edwin's Advice
He advises students to define their personal project in order to seize all opportunities to refine it: presentations, internships, exploratory interviews, conferences… are all chances to meet professionals and better understand the various potential careers.
